A genus of evergreen coniferous trees commonly known as firs, characterized by upright cones and flat needles.
From Latin 'abies' (fir tree), of uncertain ultimate origin but possibly related to Sanskrit 'abhaya' or other Indo-European roots. The scientific name was adopted by Linnaeus for the genus in his taxonomic system. It may derive from an ancient Mediterranean language.
