Abnegation

The act of rejecting, denying, or renouncing something, especially a right or responsibility; self-denial or renunciation.

From Late Latin 'abnegatio,' derived from the verb 'abnegare.' The noun form entered English in the 16th century and has been used to describe voluntary renunciation ever since.
