A plant (genus Polemonium) with roots that were traditionally used medicinally, possibly to treat abscesses and skin infections.

From 'abscess' plus 'root,' a folk medicine naming convention where plants were named for the ailments they supposedly treated, a practice called 'doctrine of signatures.'
