Accelerometer

A device that measures acceleration, the rate at which something speeds up, slows down, or changes direction.

From accelero- (from Latin accelerare) + -meter (from Greek metron, 'measure'). The term was coined in the early 20th century as technologies needed precise acceleration measurements.
