Acetabulum

The cup-shaped socket in the pelvis that receives the head of the thighbone; any cup-shaped anatomical cavity.

From Latin acetabulum (small vinegar cup), diminutive of acetum (vinegar). The Romans named it this because the socket resembled their small vinegar serving vessels.
