Acetaminophen

A common over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer, known as paracetamol outside North America.

Chemical name derived from its molecular structure: acetyl + amino + phenol. Synthesized in 1877 but not used medicinally until the 1950s when its safety profile was better understood.
