Acoupa

A large South American freshwater fish (genus Plagioscion) with a loud croaking or drumming sound used in communication.

From Portuguese or Tupi origin, entering English through colonial naturalists' accounts of South American fauna. Related to indigenous knowledge of Amazonian fish.
