Acronym created in 1996 by Intel, Microsoft, and Toshiba. Combines 'advanced' (from Latin 'ab ante'), 'configuration' (from Latin 'configurare'), 'power' (from Old French 'pooir'), and 'interface' (from Latin 'inter' + 'facies').
