A genus of rod-shaped bacteria that can form branching filaments and are pathogenic to animals and sometimes humans.
From Greek 'aktis' (ray) + Latin 'bacillus' (rod). Named for the radiating filament-like extensions these bacteria may develop, resembling rays.
