Lacking or without dendrites, the branching structures that allow nerve cells to receive signals from other neurons.

From Greek prefix 'a-' (without) + 'dendrite' (from 'dendron,' tree). Originally describes nerve cells that lack the tree-like branching structures typical of most neurons.
