Adenoidectomy

/ˌædənɔɪˈdɛktəmi/ noun

A surgical operation to remove the adenoids, which are small lymphoid tissues at the back of the throat that can become enlarged and cause breathing problems.

Coined in the 19th century from Greek adeno- 'gland' + -oid 'resembling' + -ectomy 'surgical removal'. The procedure became common in the early 1900s when doctors realized enlarged adenoids could obstruct airways.
