Adenoma

/ˌædəˈnoʊmə/ noun

A benign tumor that arises from glandular epithelial tissue. Adenomas can occur in various organs including the colon, thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal glands, and while typically non-cancerous, some may progress to malignancy.

From Greek 'aden' meaning gland and suffix '-oma' meaning tumor. The term was introduced in the late 19th century as medical understanding of glandular tissue and tumor classification became more sophisticated.
