Harmful, unfavorable, or acting against your interests. It often describes conditions, effects, or circumstances that make success harder.

From Latin *adversus* “turned against, hostile,” from *ad-* “to” and *vertere* “to turn.” Through Old French, it came to mean “unfavorable” in English.
