Afraid

/əˈfreɪd/ adjective

Feeling fear, worry, or anxiety about something that might happen or is happening. It can also be used politely to soften bad news, as in “I’m afraid not.”

From Old French *afreder* “to terrify,” likely from a Germanic root related to *fright*. The modern spelling and use stabilized in Middle English.
