The period of time or events that will come even further ahead, beyond the near future, or a future state resulting from current trajectories.

Compound of 'after' (Old English 'æfter') and 'future' (Latin 'futurus', from 'esse' meaning 'to be'). Creates a temporal concept of extended anticipation.
