Aglet

The small plastic or metal sheath at the end of a shoelace that prevents it from fraying.

From French 'aiguillette' (small needle), diminutive of 'aiguille' (needle), from Latin 'acus' (needle). Everyone knows what this IS but almost nobody knows what it's CALLED.
