Agony

Agony is extreme physical or emotional pain. It can describe sharp suffering from an injury or deep distress from a difficult situation.

From Greek *agōnia* meaning “struggle for victory” and “intense suffering,” linked to *agōn* “contest, struggle.” The idea of a hard, final struggle shifted into the sense of unbearable pain.
