A strong alcoholic spirit, typically brandy or a clear distilled liquor, common in Spain and Latin America.

From Spanish 'agua ardiente' (burning water or fiery water), literally 'agua' (water) plus 'ardiente' (burning), describing the intense heat of hard liquor.
