The sensation and perception of pain in the body, or the ability to feel pain as a sensory experience.

From Greek 'algesis' (pain sensation) combined with 'aesthesis' (sensation), creating a compound term that specifically describes pain-sensing. This technical term emerged in 19th-century medical literature.
