Alkaloid

/ˈælkəlɔɪd/ noun

Any of a large group of naturally occurring organic compounds containing nitrogen, many of which have powerful effects on living organisms (like caffeine, morphine, or nicotine).

From alkali + -oid suffix (meaning 'resembling' from Greek -oeides). Coined in the 1800s because these compounds resembled alkalis chemically and behaved similarly in reactions.
