Alkaptone

A variant spelling of alkapton; the oxidized form of homogentisic acid that produces dark pigmentation in alkaptonuria.

Variant of alkapton with the suffix -one (common in chemistry for ketones). Both forms emerged in 19th-century chemical literature to describe the same dark compound.
