A shortened form of Allosaurus, a large carnivorous theropod dinosaur from the Jurassic period.
From 'Allosaurus' (from Greek 'allo-' meaning other/different + 'sauros' meaning lizard), called 'different lizard' because it was different from other reptiles. Used informally by paleontologists and dinosaur enthusiasts.
