Allying

The act of joining together as allies; forming a partnership or alliance with someone or some group.

Present participle of 'ally,' from Old French 'alier' meaning 'to bind together,' ultimately from Latin 'alligare' (to bind). The word has been used for military and political partnerships since the 14th century.
