Alternate

/ˈɔltərnət/ adjective

Describing a leaf arrangement where leaves are attached singly at each node, with successive leaves positioned on different sides of the stem in a spiral or zigzag pattern. This is the most common leaf arrangement in plants.

From Latin 'alternatus' meaning 'one after another' or 'by turns,' from 'alternare' meaning 'to alternate.' The botanical term became established in the 18th century as plant morphology was systematically studied.
