Altimeter

An instrument that measures altitude or height above sea level, commonly used in aircraft, mountaineering, and hiking.

From Latin 'altus' (high) and Greek 'metron' (measure). The term was coined in the early 20th century as aviation technology developed and precise altitude measurement became critical.
