A raised platform or lectern in a Christian church from which biblical readings or sermons are delivered, usually located near the altar.
From Greek 'ambōn' meaning 'rim' or 'edge,' possibly related to 'anabaino' (to go up). The term entered Church Latin and has been used since early Christian times to describe pulpits.
