Ampersand

The symbol & that represents the word 'and,' commonly used in writing and business names.

From the Latin 'et' (meaning 'and'), the symbol developed from a ligature combining 'e' and 't'. In the 1500s, teachers would say 'and per se and' (meaning 'and by itself and'), which eventually became corrupted into 'ampersand.'
