A genus of large aquatic salamanders native to North America, sometimes called 'congo eels,' with reduced limbs and eel-like bodies.
From Greek 'amphi-' (both) and possibly 'ouma' or a similar root, or from an Indigenous American language filtered through Linnaean nomenclature.
