Surgical removal or incision of the tonsils (amygdala); a tonsillectomy.

From amygdala + -tomy (cutting/surgical removal). The suffix -tomy comes from Greek tome (cut). This surgical procedure term became standard medical terminology in the 19th-20th centuries, particularly in otolaryngology.
