Anabranch

A side channel or loop of a river that branches off and rejoins the main stream, common in Australia and other floodplain regions.

Possibly from Aboriginal Australian languages or hybrid formation combining 'ana-' (back, again) with 'branch.' Term is particularly used in Australian geography.
