A large, non-venomous snake found in South America that kills prey by constriction.
Possibly from Sinhalese henakandaya meaning 'whip snake' or from Tamil anaikonda meaning 'elephant killer.' The word was first applied to an Asian python, then transferred to the South American boa by European naturalists in the 18th century.
