Plural form of anaptychus; small calcareous plates found as fossils in certain extinct cephalopods, believed to have functioned as protective opercula or closure structures.
From Greek ana- (back, again) + ptyx- (to fold), literally 'unfolding back.' The term was coined in the 19th century by paleontologists studying fossilized mollusk remains.
