A small dinosaur from the early Jurassic period that was one of the first long-necked sauropod dinosaurs, measuring only about 8 feet long.
From Greek 'anchis' (near) and 'sauros' (lizard), named because it was thought to be closely related to other dinosaur groups. The name was given by paleontologists to reflect its evolutionary position as a transitional form between earlier and later dinosaur lineages.
