Plural of anchorage: places where ships can anchor safely, or the system and facilities provided for ships to anchor.

From 'anchor' (from Old English 'ancor' and Latin 'anchora') plus '-age' suffix (denoting a place or condition). The word evolved from the physical anchor itself to describe the location where anchoring occurs.
