The plural of anlage; the initial stages or rudimentary forms of an organ or structure in a developing organism.

From German 'Anlage,' meaning 'foundation' or 'disposition,' derived from 'an-' (on) and 'Lage' (position/arrangement). The term was adopted into biology in the 19th century to describe embryonic development.
