Complete or near-complete absence of oxygen reaching body tissues; a severe condition where tissues don't receive enough oxygen to function.

From Greek 'a-' (without) + 'oxys' (oxygen). Coined in medical terminology to distinguish from hypoxia (partial oxygen deprivation). Emerged prominently in 20th century medicine.
