Antarctica

/ænˈtɑːk.tɪ.kə/ proper noun

Antarctica is the icy continent that surrounds the South Pole. It is covered by a massive ice sheet and has no permanent human population, only temporary research stations.

From Greek 'antarktikos' meaning 'opposite to the north', from 'anti-' (opposite) + 'arktikos' (northern, relating to the Great Bear constellation). It was named as the counterpart to the Arctic region.
