Anthropomorphism

/ˌænθrəpəˈmɔrfɪzəm/ noun

The attribution of human characteristics, emotions, or behaviors to non-human entities, especially deities or animals. This includes giving gods human form, personalities, and social relationships.

From Greek 'anthropos' (human) and 'morphe' (form). The concept was first critically examined by ancient Greek philosopher Xenophanes, who noted that humans create gods in their own image.
