Opposed to monarchy as a form of government or hostile to monarchist principles and the rule of kings and queens.

Formed from 'anti-' (against), 'monarch' (a single ruler), and '-istic' (relating to or characteristic of). The term became prominent during revolutionary periods, especially the American and French Revolutions.
