Designed to resist or protect against damage from earthquakes and seismic activity.

From anti- (against) + seismic (from Greek seismos, earthquake, shaking). The term became common in the 20th century as earthquake engineering developed, especially after devastating earthquakes revealed the need for specialized building techniques.
