Aphanapteryx

An extinct flightless bird from Mauritius that was related to rails and was hunted to extinction in the 17th century.

From Greek 'aphanes' (obscure, invisible) and 'pteryx' (wing), referring to the bird's hidden or reduced wings. The name was given by naturalists studying fossil remains and historical accounts of the mysterious bird.
