Apocope

The dropping or omission of the final sound, syllable, or letters of a word, like saying 'ad' instead of 'advertisement'.

From Greek apocopē, composed of apo- (away) and koptein (to cut or strike). The term has been used in grammar and linguistics since ancient Greek scholars analyzed language patterns.
