Having the power to avert evil influences or bad luck; designed to ward off harm through supernatural means.

From Greek 'apotropaios' (averting evil) — 'apo-' (away) + 'trepein' (to turn). Gargoyles on churches, horseshoes over doors, and the evil eye bead are all apotropaic — they TURN evil AWAY.
