Appease

/əˈpiz/ verb

To pacify or placate someone by giving in to their demands; to make peace with an aggressor by satisfying their requirements. Appeasement often involves making concessions to avoid conflict.

From Old French apaisier meaning 'to bring to peace,' from a (to) and pais (peace). The word originally had positive connotations of peacemaking, but gained negative associations after WWII appeasement policies failed to prevent war.
