Archaeologist

A scientist who studies the material remains of past human societies, like artifacts, buildings, and bones, to understand how people lived in ancient times.

From Greek 'archaia' (ancient things) + 'logia' (study of). The '-ist' suffix means 'one who practices or specializes in.' The term was formalized in the 19th century as archaeology became a scientific discipline.
