A master builder or chief architect; the supreme craftsman in charge of major construction projects.

From arch- (chief) + builder (from Old English 'build,' meaning to construct). The term refers to the principal figure in medieval building projects, often with both architectural and administrative responsibilities. Used especially for cathedral builders.
