Archdeacons

Plural of archdeacon; high-ranking church officials who serve as chief deacons and oversee a section of a diocese.

From archdeacon (arch- 'chief' + deacon from Greek diakonos 'servant' or 'minister'). The position developed in early Christian churches as the hierarchy became more complex.
