The most tyrannical or oppressive ruler; a supreme dictator or absolute authoritarian.

From 'arch-' (chief, supreme) and 'despot' (a tyrant or absolute ruler), which comes from Greek 'despotes' meaning master or lord. This formation became common in describing the worst examples of authoritarian rule, particularly in 19th-century political discourse.
