Archdiocese

The district or area overseen by an archbishop in the Catholic or other Christian churches.

From Greek 'archi-' (chief) + 'diocesis' (from Greek 'dioikesis' meaning administration). The 'arch-' prefix means the highest level, so an archdiocese is the most important diocese, governed by an archbishop instead of a regular bishop.
