Relating to the Archean Eon, the earliest geological time period when Earth's crust first formed, roughly 4 to 2.5 billion years ago.

From Greek 'arche' (beginning) plus '-an.' This geological term was formalized in the 19th century to denote the most ancient rocks and the oldest era of Earth's history.
